Notification of Public Consultation: Thursday 7 January to Friday 19 February
Stratford-on-Avon District Council is running a public consultation on its proposed Gypsy and Traveller and Travelling Showpeople SPD. This letter is being sent to key consultees across the District and wider area, and those individuals who have requested to be notified of planning policy consultations undertaken by Stratford-on-Avon District Council.
What is the draft planning guidance about?
The SPD is one of a number of SPDs that accompanies the Core Strategy, and provides detailed advice and guidance to applicants when submitting planning applications relating to Gypsy and Traveller and Travelling Showpeople accommodation. When finished (adopted), it will be used by Stratford-on-Avon District Council to help reach decision on whether to approve or refuse planning applications.
The consultation draft sets out the need for additional accommodation within the District and identifies areas where new Gypsy and Traveller and Travelling Showpeople sites may be suitable, subject to planning permission, as well as guidance on what any new sites should look like in respect on their design and layout.
The SPD does not allocate land for new permanent sites as this can only be done through a higher level policy document. Prepared as an interim measure, the contents of the SPD will be subsumed into a Gypsy and Traveller Local Plan in due course. The Council has started work on a Gypsy and Traveller Local Plan and is currently exploring options to identify new permanent sites.

Due to current restrictions resulting from the Coronavirus pandemic, the Council’s offices at Elizabeth House in Stratford-upon-Avon are currently closed. As such it is not possible to make a copy of the draft SPD available for inspection at this location. However if you wish to view a paper copy of the consultation draft SPD then please contact us and we will arrange for a copy to made available to you.
How to Comment
Information on how to comment is included within the SPD itself and on the website atwww.stratford.gov.uk/gandt-spd. By responding to this consultation you will have the opportunity to have your say on the content of the SPD before it is finalised. Comments must be received by the District Council by 5pm on Friday 19 February 2021.
What happens next
The comments submitted during the consultation period will be assessed and used to amend, as appropriate, the final version of the SPD. This final version will then be agreed by The Cabinet before being formally adopted by Council. Once adopted, the SPD can be used by the Council to assess planning applications.
